A medium bird (23 to 24 cm), found along the east coast of Africa from Transkei to Zanzibar. It is an uncommon local migrant, breeding inland and migrating to the coast after breeding. It inhabits wooded streams when breeding and otherwise mangrove swamps. It is a solitary or in pairs and eats insects and crabs.
